End of Summer – John 12:1-8
.
As Rev. Marcus Halley points out, there is a difference between change and loss, thought they are often very interconnected, and this passage demonstrates what happens when they are conflated. Many Christians, myself included, struggle with an open-handed willingness to give up even that which we hold most dear for Jesus; we are not so much afraid of the life-giving change he brings as the loss of that which we love. Yet, just as a changing season comes with the hope of new life, we can rest assured that, no matter how beautiful a thing is that we must lose, “God can redeem that which we think we’re losing.”
.
Thanks of course to Rev. Marcus Halley, whose sermon “Giving Ourselves Away” inspired this reflection.
