Psalm 23
.
I’ve been thinking about walking in the shadow of death lately, and how it tends to colour everything whether you notice or not. In antithesis to that, we have a God that calls it out, challenges it, and wins, tearing starlight pinpricks in the blackest veil. Focus on that.

James 5:13-16
.
I think this passage is a good reminder of one of the reasons community is so important. I was talking today with some friends about deflection–something I’m quite experienced at–and it’s fun to joke about, but at the end of the day, I am made aware of just how important it is to open up. It’s important to do so safely for sure, but keeping things bottled up out of pride, machismo, fear, or even misguided attempts at care, is not healthy. We were made to confess and forgive, speak and listen, not to be ringed in by circular thoughts that bounce around within the four walls of our own heads.

Didn’t post this yesterday cuz I had a late night and fell asleep, so I’m just shifting the schedule by a day 😅

John 13:1-15
.
People don’t like feet. They’re dirty, they smell, and compared to other body parts, they’re not exactly easy on the eyes. They’re vulnerable, and to focus on them is tantamount to forcing them, warts and all (sometimes literally) into a previously ‘clean’ setting. And that’s why the imagery of this passage, and the commandment that Jesus gives through it, is so important. This is leadership, leadership which sees, comforts, and calls the lost, sick, and marginalized. This is love that loves the whole, from the top of the head to the soles of the feet.

Meditation: Facing Goliath (see John 16:33)
.
Earlier tonight, I read an article entitled “Climate Change and the Christian” by my dear friend Julia Bartel; its poinancy was a double edged sword. On one hand, she clearly lays out the literally life-or-death issue of climate change and provides a measured response that Christians can adopt, based on a theology of redemption, faith, and peaceful stewardship. On the other hand, just bringing up the issue put a sour taste in my mouth that I haven’t really been able to wash out.
There are dozens of these issues in our world today–modern Goliaths that are, by all standards, far too large for any one person, or even a passionate group, to handle. Looking at institutionalized racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, white supremacy, greed, homelessness, slavery, and so many other giants at the gate can be enough to make us despair. But we need to look at them. We need to talk about them. We need to understand that sour taste, so that we can be part of the solution. Most importantly, we need to remember that David was an ordinary shepherd, with an ordinary sling, throwing ordinary stones from a river. By all standards, Goliath was too big for him to handle, and that’s why he didn’t handle him. We can’t handle the world and it’s problems, but we know the one who overcame the world. Keep throwing stones.

I am thrilled to announce that my artwork, “Parable of the Talents” is installed and officially open to the public at Gallery 1313, in partnership with CarpOs collective! It’s been a long time coming (now you know what all that cryptic photography was for), but I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I’d so love if you’d consider stopping by and taking a look–I don’t want to toot my own horn, but the photo really doesn’t do it justice. My work’s unveiling also coincides with the opening of Gallery 1313’s newest exhibition, which features art from a group of very talented York University artists, so it’s certainly worth the trek!
.
Stay tuned over the next few days for some more details, meanings, and behind-the-scenes looks at “Parable of the Talents.”
.
Thanks again to Gallery 1313 and CarpOs for this opportunity, and for everyone who’s helped me along the way. “Parable of the Talents” really is all about the artistic journey God has brought me on, and I’m so grateful to everyone he’s brought along beside me, which includes you, reading this right now. Thank you.

James 1:1-12
.
There’s something to be said for staying the course, for showing up even when you don’t feel it, for staying in the boat rather than jumping ship. When set adrift, you may lose sight of how you got out there in the first place, but you set out for a reason. Keep pressing towards the horizon.
