Luke 2:22-38 (with Malachi 4 for context)
.
“She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”
.
The Israelites had been awaiting a savior for longer than most could remember. Sometimes I’m sure they felt one would never come. Like Noah awaiting an end to the endless sea, the promise of salvation, whether it came as an olive branch or a tiny baby, completely changes the game. We wait too, in our own way. Let this be your olive branch–a savior is here; now go tell those who have been waiting.

Something beautiful: A hawk (or possibly falcon) that I saw while dropping my sister off at work on Boxing Day

Meditation: The Gospel of Batman (see Deuteronomy 32:1-4)
.
“He’s not God. He’s not. He tries…he does…I know. But he can’t… He’s not perfect. He’s just us. But in a leather bat suit.”
.
I never really thought I’d have an excuse to bring Batman and Broken Mirrors together, but yet, here we are, thanks to Tom King and Lee Weeks’ story, “Cold Days,” in Batman Vol. 8 (2018). To sum up quickly, in this arc, Bruce slips up as Batman, and has to come to realize that the faith he has put in ‘the Batman’ has failed him; he realises that, as good as he is, he is not, and cannot be perfect, and if he falls into Batman waiting to be caught in the nick of time, he will “always be… waiting.” I don’t particularly want to ventriloquise this into a specific message, because I don’t think my message would specifically be the one the author had in mind, but I will say that this really did make me think of what I put stock in–not just to protect myself, but also to protect it/them from what I believe about them–and encourages me to think about the one who, I believe, would catch me.
.
“You all said he saved you. So do what you would for any other man who’d don’t that. What you would never do for God. Save him.”
.
.
.
I highly recommend you all go check out Tom King’s amazing ongoing run on Batman (from which the quotes in this reflection are also taken), available from Hoopla or your nearest comic shop (physical or digital). I also didn’t really mention it in the body, but Lee Weeks and Elizabeth Breitweiser did phenomenal things with the art, so hats off to them.

Blessings Day Six: The Light into the World (see John 1:1-5, Isaiah 9:1-7)
.
“The lights on the tree
They don’t go out…
For you and me”
.
The last blessing is one that illuminates all the rest: that the Light came into the world, and comes into our lives every day. He’s a light that won’t go out, and even when it may seem dim, the darkness will never overcome it. The tree may come down, and the radio may stop playing the tunes of the season, but the light will never go out.
.
.
The quote that starts this reflection is from “Lights” by John Mark McMillan, which I’ve linked in my description.

Blessings Day Six: Wind and Waves (see Mark 4:35-41)
.
“Be still, my soul; the waves and wind still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below”
.
Trials may not seem like blessings at the time (or even often in hindsight), but I believe that they are. When the winds roar and waves rage, I am forced to think about the Jesus I believe in, just like the disciples so long ago. Is he a simple man, trapped in the same sinking boat as me? Is he asleep, content or ambivalent to my peril? Is he some terrible creature who frightens me just as easily as the forces of nature? I think he is more than all of these, and I so want to understand better. I know I’ll never really get it, but if these times of storm remind me only that he is in control, and he cares for me–cares for us–then they must be worth something.
.
.
The quote that starts this reflection is from the hyymn “Be Still My Soul,” which is as lovely as it is haunting. Whenever I think of the words, they come to me in the voice of Levi the Poet, from his track “Stillbirth,” which, coincidentally, mirrors aesthetically a lot of the feeling of a storm. I’ve linked it in the description.

Blessings Day Five: Rest (see Psalm 127:1-2, Isaiah
40:31)
.
“Sleep in heavenly peace”
.
The Christmas season can be a lot for all of us. For some, the days of childlike wonder seem so far away, doused by the go-go-go attitude of holiday responsibility. In times like these, it’s easy to drift away from the very person at the centre of it all, or worse, confine Him to a shape that fits like a puzzle piece in all the other bits of the season. I’m thankful for the times Christ has blessed me with rest, because without that, all my ends would be little more than fruitless dreams.
.
.
The quote that starts this reflection, is, as you might have guessed, from “Silent Night,” the classic Christmas carol that still speaks volumes today. I’ve linked to a version of the song that I’ve been enjoying recently, by John Mark McMillan.

Blessings Day Four: Taste and See (see Psalm 34)
.
“I’ve been thinking about just what “beauty” is, but no amount of thinking has added beauty to it.
All I know is that it points beyond itself, like I long beyond your love notes, like I long for you.”
.
Today for me was filled with beautiful sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and feelings, and it reminded me just how blessed I am to have these senses, and to have them working well; as I’ve already mentioned, I know this isn’t the case for everyone, and I’m also very much aware that these faculties I take for granted may someday fade. I don’t want to take them for granted.the fact that we can see and hear and taste and smell and feel enough just to survive is a blessing, but beyond that, we have been granted the opportunity to experience beauty through these senses is beyond my understanding, but I chose to believe that it is for a reason.
.
.
The quote but starts this reflection is from “Ophan Theism” by Levi the Poet which is linked in my description. I tend to resonate a lot with Levi’s thinking, and this song is a particular touchstone for me. Also related to this reflection is the film “It’s Such a Beautiful Day” by Don Herzfeldt, which is my favourite movie, partially because of the way it perfectly encapsulates the idea of transcendent beauty in the everyday. It is 100% worth watching, and is also linked in my description.

Blessings Day Three: Petals in Our Pockets (see 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11)
.
“Like the petals in our pockets
May we remember who we are
Unconditionally cared for
By those who share our broken hearts”
.
Today, my family sat down for our Christmas tradition of watching “It’s A Wonderful Life,” my favourite Christmas film of all time. Every year, I find I relate so much to George; we’re both people who care a lot for our family and are willing to sacrifice for their happiness. However, whenever I’ve drawn this comparison in the past, it has always been with a subtle smirk of pride. There’s a bit of a hero complex that develops with always being the dependable one (and this is not a good thing). This year though, the movie made me think about how, though everyone else’s life is changed without George, it is really his need for them that draws him back. People like he and I can spend so much of our lives trying to make ourselves needed, but often don’t notice just how much we need others. The lyrics that started this reflection come from Sleeping at Last’s “Snow,” a song that touches on this need, and how loss plays into it. My family was hit with a big loss this year, but we’re still here. What the song and the movie that it references reminds me is that our families (those we are born with or those we choose) can be our petals, the things that point us back to life, and show us the movement of God. I am so blessed to have the family I do–I know so many people who can’t say the same, and I so want to be a hero to all of them, but at the end of the day, I can’t be who other people want me, or how I want myself, to be if I don’t acknowledge and cling to those petals.
.

“Snow” by Sleeping at Last is linked in the description.

Blessings Day Two: New Dawns and Second Chances (Luke 15:11-32)
.
“The sun will rise and we will start again”
.
I can’t help but fall in love with the fact that God so loves the lost, because that means He loves me. I have been lost and I have felt loss, but in all situations, I am reminded that His mercies are new every morning, and so I can be also. You’re never too far, and there is never a moment you can’t turn from, to Him.
.
.
The quote at the start is from Twenty One Pilots song “Truce.” I’ve attached a link in my description, as well as a link to a recording of the song mentioned in last night’s reflection, by Sleeping at Last.
