Meditation: Tangled (see John 10:1-18 and Luke 15)
.
At my day job, I spend a lot of time coiling cables, and I have to say, the most irritating thing is to have to coil a tangled wire. Some have just a knot or two; they’re not great, but not the worst. Others are twisted on the inside from years of mistreatment; you’d think that would be hidden, but you can see the bumps all along the rubber. The trick is to coil everything properly the first time, because the more you leave it, the more damaged it will get. We are much the same way. Things hurt us and we hurt ourselves; we tie ourselves in knots, making unhealthy choices that twist the wires inside. We can find ways to untangle ourselves a bit–undo the occasional knot–but to completely work out all the damage would take more care than any one of us is willing to give. Thankfully, we have a savior who is willing to put in the effort–whatever we need to be whole again–because to Him, we’re worth it.

Meditation: God’s not limping (see Isaiah 40:1-5, 28-31)
.
No matter what state you’re in–whether you’re sick or well, tired or energized–God can and will use you to do amazing things. He never gets tired, never needs healing. When you think you can’t go on, lean on Him. He wants you as you are, and ultimately it is only in Him that we are made whole.

1 Corinthians 15
.
I typically shy away from traditional visual motifs and images that are often found in Christian art, because I know they can be alienating to people who aren’t super familiar, but this time, I think it’s important to draw on one of the typical ‘resurrection images.’ Just like the Jews that Paul was writing to needed to remember, we also need to be reminded of how amazing and impossibly true Jesus’ resurrection is. How else can we understand the power–the same power–that pulls us out of our own death to sin?

2 Corinthians 7:1-10
.
Habits and addictions can be some of the most demoralizing things, especially for a Christian, as we believe that God can break any chain. These cycles that take time, work, and sometimes professional help to break out of can make it seem like God wants to see is suffer in our sin, shame, or pain, all the while chiming along with the old (non-Biblical) adage, “God helps those who help themselves.” Rather, we should take a page from Paul’s book, who is reminded that these moments of our weakness–when no matter how hard we try, it feels like we can’t help ourselves–are opportunities to see God’s active grace and power. When we’re going through a trial, the goal is most often to come out the other side. Sometimes God will take out out of it, but if He does not, continue onward–get the help you need and do your part, even if it’s just a little–and know that He will carry you through.

Malachi 4
.
To quote Chance the Rapper, “the book don’t end with Malachi.” Malachi 4 comes with a promise. It’s the last book in the Bible before the good news of Jesus comes to light, and in a lot of ways it sets the stage for what’s to come. It shows the stakes: the world is broken–even God’s people turn away–and if nothing changes soon, justice will have to come, and it will be painful. But bigger than this, we see the promise that the change is coming. Today, we know what that is: Jesus–God not holding back. There is also a day coming where we will see Him face to face, but His flame in us is lit here and now, every day.

Meditation: The Scandal of Grace (See John 15:12-17, 3:16, and 19:16-20:18)
.
We need to remind ourselves of what Jesus really did for us on the cross. He died, painfully, so that we could live; He did that for you, because He loves you more than you can even imagine. This can sometimes be a hard message to receive–it was a hard one to make–but it’s also the most beautiful good news. It is perfect love. It is perfect care. It isn’t half way or cutting corners. And most importantly, this love isn’t something that death could keep down; He rose again, and so will we–not just physically when we die, but spirituality here and now. If this is your first time hearing this, or if it’s something you’ve heard a thousand times, it’s still for you. If you want to know more, or want to know how this life can be yours, I’d be happy to talk to you. God wants you. This love is yours, if you want it.
.
Thanks to Hope Forsey for suggesing the image of Jesus holding the ASL sign for “I love you” years ago to me (it’s not just “rock on” 😜), and for the praise team at Fair Havens Ministries for facilitating such an impactful time of worship tonight.

Psalm 91
.
I love the image of God as a fortress, a shield, and a protector, because I know we all need that, but I think in today’s world that is becoming more and more isolationist, we need to remember that this fortress isn’t just for ourselves, or the person we like. As Jesus said, even wicked people treat their friends well (Matthew 5:42-48); we need to extend the shelter of God’s grace to all. The amount of safety He provides us is contingent only on who He is, and He is the perfect protector.

Meditation: Best Laid Plans (see Proverbs 21:5, 3:5-6, and 16:9)
.
I’ve been thinking a lot today about planning–specifically planning in relation to reliance. If I have learned anything in my 21 years, it’s that plans don’t always go as they’re meant to. However, I’m trying to stop thinking of that as a bad thing. God wants us to plan–it’s part of our jobs as stewards–but we should ultimately surrender all our plans to Him, knowing that they might not go as we wanted. In those cases however, we need to remind ourselves that, to contradict ol’ Robbie, when God changes our plans, it is not for our grief or pain, but for the promised joy.

Exodus 7:1-13
.
I’m on a mission trip right now, running a day camp for the local kids, and in the two weeks the team has been up here, we’ve already made four trips to the hospital. You could imagine that morale could be low–the idea that maybe something sinister is trying to work against us doing God’s work is not uncommon. In fact, I’m sure it’s true, because the devil is always trying to go against God’s people, but regardless we’re in good spirits (no pun intended). It’s not ironic that this morning we taught the kids the story from Exodus 7 of Moses’s staff/snake eating Pharaoh’s magician’s snakes. Evil is out there, and it does want to hurt those who love God, but we have nothing to fear. The Devil can flex all he wants; next to God, it’s no contest.
